Stanford Biodesign launched the From the Innovator’s Workbench speaker’s series in 2003 to enable the Stanford Biodesign community and the public to learn from the greatest health technology innovators of our time. With multiple Innovator’s Workbench events held annually, each one features an individual or a panel of innovators being interviewed about their innovation process, insights, and perspectives on the changing healthcare landscape.
This event will feature a panel consisting of Josh Makower, MD and the ExploraMed team. David Cassak, a renowned healthcare journalist, is the moderator of the event.

21st Annual Thomas J. Fogarty Lecture: Focus on Innovation featuring Brook Byers, Founding Partner, Kleiner Perkins
The Fogarty lectureship was established to bring together a diverse community in Silicon Valley focusing on leaders in discovery, invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship. About Brook Byers:
Brook Byers is a founding member of Kleiner Perkins. A venture capital investor since 1972, Brook has been closely involved with more than 60 new technology-based ventures, many of which have become public companies. He formed the first life sciences practice group in the venture capital profession in 1984 and led KP to become a premier venture capital firm in the medical, healthcare and biotechnology sectors. KP has invested in and helped build more than 120 life sciences companies that have developed hundreds of products to treat underserved medical needs for many millions of patients. Brook has been an innovator in precision medicine and health genomics, antibodies and devices. He was the founding president and then chairman of four biotechnology companies that were incubated in KP’s offices and went on to become public companies with an aggregate market value of more than US $8 billion. He serves on the board of directors of Epiodyne, Enjoy, Newsela, Octave and Verana Health.
Brook serves on the Board of Overseers of the University of California San Francisco medical campus and hospitals, the Stanford Medicine Advisory Council, the Board of Directors of the New Schools Foundation, the Advisory Board of Stanford’s Center for Precision Health and Integrated Diagnostics and the Stanford Center for Biodesign. In 2007, UCSF awarded Brook the UCSF Medal, its honorary degree equivalent. In 2008, Brook was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2009, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Venture Capital Association. In 2010, he received an honorary Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology.
Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Brook graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech and received an M.B.A. from Stanford University.

Mir Imran has accepted the invitation to be the 24th annual Fogarty guest lecturer. The date of the event is Friday September 30, 2022 at 4pm. It will be a hybrid event.
Mir Imran, Chairman & CEO of InCube Labs, is a prolific healthcare innovator and entrepreneur, who has been developing and commercializing breakthrough medical innovations for over 40 years.
Mir began his career as a healthcare entrepreneur in the late 1970’s with his pioneering contributions to the first FDA-approved Implantable Defibrillator (ICD). Since then, Mir has founded more than 20 life sciences companies and two tech companies, 15 of which have seen liquidity events (IPO/Acquisition). His most recent exit, Rani Therapeutics Holdings Inc., went public on Nasdaq in July 2021.
Mir’s inventions have saved the lives of millions of patients, and many have become the standards of care. He has developed innovative therapies for a number of chronic diseases, including, anemia, chronic pain, stroke, diabetes, and several cardiovascular conditions. His recent company, Rani Therapeutics, is revolutionizing the management of chronic diseases, by replacing painful injectable therapies with oral biologics.
Mir holds more than 800 issued & pending US patents. In 2016, QMed named Mir as one of the “Top 50 Medical Inventors of All Time”. Mir is a fellow of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Inventors and the American Institute of Medical & Biological Engineers. In 2009, Mir was inducted into the Rutgers University Hall of Distinguished Alumni.
Mir is also the co-founder & managing director of InCube Ventures, LP, a medtech/biotech venture capital fund. In addition, Mir serves on the boards of several life science companies, on the advisory board of the Lemelson Foundation, and is a trustee of the UCSC Foundation. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh and actively supports the promotion and teaching of innovation and entrepreneurship at colleges and universities. As a philanthropist, Mir is passionately supporting education in India and US, especially for underprivileged students.
